Rhodium Plating

What is rhodium plating?

Rhodium plating is a thin layer of rhodium metal applied to sterling silver jewelry. Think of it like a protective coating that enhances the silver's appearance and durability.

Why do we rhodium plate sterling silver?

Brilliant shine - Rhodium gives silver an exceptionally bright, mirror-like finish that's even more reflective than regular silver.

Prevents tarnishing - The rhodium layer acts as a barrier, protecting the silver underneath from oxidation and tarnish, so your jewelry stays beautiful longer.

Increases durability - Rhodium is extremely hard and scratch-resistant, making your jewelry more resistant to everyday wear.

Hypoallergenic - Rhodium is nickel-free and won't cause skin reactions, making it ideal for sensitive skin.

The plating will eventually wear off with regular use, especially on high-contact areas like ring bands. How long it lasts depends on wear - typically 1-3 years. When it wears thin, you may notice the silver showing through or the piece starting to tarnish in spots. The good news is pieces can be replated by a jeweler to restore that like-new appearance, or you can allow the natural patina and antique look.

Care tips:

To preserve the plating, remove jewelry before swimming, cleaning, or applying lotions and perfumes, as chemicals can wear down the plating faster. Clean gently with a soft cloth rather than harsh polishing cloths.
